The Chevrolet Volt will get a slightly lower price tag for 2012. The navigation system and Bose audio system have been made options, last year they were standard. This year some new standard features have been added. They include updated keyless ignition/entry and the new MyLink system. The MyLink provides Bluetooth streaming audio as well as voice control over the audio system and your cell phone.

In case you missed all the commotion last year when this car was introduced, let’s get clarify something: The 2012 Chevrolet Volt is not a pure electric car. Most consumers incorrectly assumed it was. This notion was helped along by the car’s name and some vague marketing. The Volt, however, is basically a plug-in hybrid, meaning it has the ability to run much faster and farther under just electric power than a normal hybrid. This means the Volt can drive up to 100 mph and anywhere from 25-50 miles without using any gasoline.

Check out our Inventory of the New 2012 Chevy Volt in stock and waiting for a test drive at Reedman Toll Chevy. Come in and kick the tires.

The first production of this American Classic automobile rolled off the temporary assembly line in Flint Michigan this date in 1953. There were only 300 of them built that first year, that makes this the rarest of all year Corvettes. All of that year’s cars were White and made with Red Interiors and black folding tops. Only 2 options were available also, an AM Radio and a heater. All cars built that year were built with these 2 options. I guess you couldn’t really call them options.

These Corvettes were built with a Blue Flame Six, a 235 cubic inch inline six cylinder engine rated at about 150 horses. The Sticker price was a whopping $3,498. Wish you had purchased one of these? If you happen to see any Corvette on the road these days, don’t forget to wish them a Happy 58th Birthday.

There has been much media attention over the new all electric Chevy Volt. And now, the Volt has officially arrived in America. Chevrolet started rolling the first Volts off the assembly line and onto car haulers on Dec. 13, sending them off to anxious customers who have been waiting months for their electric car, or advanced hybrid or whatever you like to call the Volt.

The five-door compact hatchback 2011 Chevrolet Volt is GM’s first electric car. It provides 40 miles of battery range, plus a further 300 miles from a gasoline engine-generator that sends power directly to the car’s motor. It represents a major advance over gasoline-electric hybrids like the Toyota Prius, and its major competition is likely to be the Nissan Leaf.

The Volt was unveiled—to wide public acclaim—as a concept car at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. Only 10,000 or so will be built for the 2011 model year, and perhaps 60,000 a year thereafter. It uses some of the same mechanical elements as the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan, but only the Volt has a lithium-ion battery pack located in the tunnel between the front seats and extending under the rear seat. It drives entirely like a “normal car,” although without any transmission shifting noises, and like most electric cars, its acceleration from a stop is brisk and continuous. So for those who have been waiting months, even years, to get their hands on a Volt, the time may be very near.

GM and IBM have partnered to develop the software which GM used to develop and perfect the Chevy Volt. This includes the sophisticated battery simulation software that allowed the car to be developed in only 29 months from the point of greenlight. GM had to project and simulate how the battery would function and operate over a ten year/150,000 mile lifetime in that compressed period, a feat IBMs software helped to achieve. Both IBM supercomputers and software development tools were utilized in the process. IBM software and supercomputers were also used to design and develop the multitude of electronic controls systems within the the Volt and to determine the optimal way for them to interact, creating an ideal “system of systems” configuration. The Volt contains and relies on 10 million lines of computer code that controls its 100 electronic components. In comparison, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner has just 8 million lines of code. The Volt is 40% electronic, up from the 5% electronic rate of the typical car in the 1980s.

In particular, it was IBM’s so-called Rational software that GM used to design and test the Volt. IBM acquired the company Teleologic in 2007 and as a result expanded its Rational Software line into automotive applications. The software enabled engineers to quickly make changes in the system and predict the results on-the-fly as development progressed. It was GM’s goal to design this incredibly complex car so that its orchestra of computerized electronic processes operate seamlessly below the surface to simply create a fun and pleasant user experience.

According to Chevy, the months are counting dow to the official unveiling of the production ready Chevy Volt. The 2011 Vol news for wuite a while now. Chevrolet’s all electric vehicle holds claims to amazing mileage, has shown its stylish design, and most of all, is one of the first all electric vehicles in development to hold out hope of being seen on the road and in dealerships. The Volt, now just months away from launch, is at the “99 percent level” of engineering calibration. The driving characteristics likely won’t change much; engineers are now just aiming for consistency to ensure that the Volt always drives as expected.

The electric vehicle is now going through its final phases of road tests, and so far is hitting the mark. There will be a special option on the Volt called mountain mode, which allows the driver to better deal with changing elevations. To optimize performance, drivers should turn it on before heading up the mountain, so the Volt can adjust its reserve capability. There is also a sport mode. It’s an adjustment to the pedal mapping, so those who have a heavier foot will have a more aggressive feel. It’s sure to be subtle though — the Volt draws its power from lithium-ion batteries and a 1.4-liter engine. The default mode is normal. Additionally, motorists can further adjust the car’s character by selecting eco and comfort settings for the climate control.

Through all of these variables — and the very basic electric or extended-range periods — the Volt will have one singular trait: It will feel like an electric car at all times, even when the gasoline engine kicks on. Engineers also paid special attention to the NVH, acoustics and making the engine’s turn-on as subtle as possible. The 40-mile range on electricity is still expected.

Despite a recent push on the electric vehicle front (a production ready Chevy Volt for example), General Motors put the public on notice this week that it remains as committed as ever to using its rolling science projects as a test bed for getting real world, mass-produced, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in consumer driveways. For those who have not been following GM’s fuel cell efforts, here is an update. Project Driveway is a real-world test that began in late 2007 with the automaker deploying a fleet of 119 specially outfitted Chevrolet Equinox vehicles with a hydrogen fuel cell stack providing the juice for its electric propulsion. Drivers have logged more than 1.3 million miles in all around the world during the test, and even got in a few accidents. The centerpiece of GM’s future hydrogen-powered efforts revolves around its Gen 2 hydrogen fuel cell stack, which is being designed to fit in a four-cylinder engine bay. It’s reportedly some 220 pounds lighter than the stack powering the Equinox fleet, and uses about a third of the platinum than the present stack. Gen2 will employ fewer and lighter components and with its smaller overall size, GM hopes it will be able to spread the stack around to more vehicles in the future. In addition to the Gen 2 stack, GM is also continuing to develop its hydrogen storage solutions. The Equinoxes at present employ three tanks, which the automaker hopes to switch out with a smaller, two-tank setup.

When will GM fuel cell vehicles come to the market? GM says it is focusing on producing a “production intent” program by 2015. Notice the word intent, meaning that this question is really unanswered; however, GM firmly believes that hydrogen-powered vehicles will have a place in future of powertrains.
